APAO INVITES ALL DELEGATES OF THE 34TH APAO CONGRESS TO TAKE PART IN THE

1ST APAO PHOTO CONTEST

To participate, delegates can submit photo(s) related to three theme categories in ophthalmology. The winners will be awarded at the APAO Congress Party on the evening of Thursday, March 7, 2019. The Champion (one winner, receiving a digital camera Nikon Z6 and a certificate from the APAO) will be chosen across all categories and entries. First and Second Runner-ups will also be awarded. The distinguished judges invited for the contest include Mr. Visarute Angkatavanich, the Thai photographer whose photos of Siamese Fighting Fish were used as the wallpaper to showcase the screen of iphone 6.

 

ENTRY GUIDELINES

 

  1. ENTRY CATEGORIES
  • Anterior Segment Photography (A) with any devices or techniques such as external eye, slit lamp, gonioscopy, optical coherence tomography, etc.

  • Posterior Segment Photography (P) with any devices or techniques such as fundus photography including color and monochromatic, angiography, optical coherence tomography etc.

  • General Photography (G) that innovates the meaning of ophthalmology.

Code (for filename labeling) = (A) for anterior segment, (P) for posterior segment, and (G) for general photography

  1. NO PHOTO EDITING IS ALLOWED, EXCEPT THE FOLLOWING TECHNICAL ENHANCEMENTS
  • Contrast and brightness adjustments. However, the contrast or brightness adjustments must not alter the photo-realistic elements of the photo and editing should always be in the vein of coaxing the best out of a capture rather than creating a new image. The adjustment should enhance, but not create, an illusion or effect

  • Composite (eg, fundus montage photo)

  • Cropping

  1. ELIGIBILITY
  • Any registrants for The 34th Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Congress.

  • Each contestant may submit no more than 3 photos per category.

  1. PHOTO FORMAT AND SUBMISSION
  • Minimum resolution is 1200 x 1600 pixels at 300 dpi.

  • File(s) must be submitted in .tif (TIFF), .png (PNG), or highest-quality .jpg (JPG) format.

  • File name: Each image will be labeled as follows: contestant’s last name, code (A, P, or G), submission number of the photo. For example: wongA1.jpg for photo number 1 in anterior segment photography category submitted by Wong. If a contestant submits 2 photos in same category, the second submission should be labeled as wongA2.jpg.

  • Photos should be sent via email to apaoimg@gmail.com together with a text document of

    • Contestant’s full name

    • Affiliated Practice or Institute

    • City, Country

    • Each photo can have a title, which can be creative and not necessarily the diagnosis of the disease shown

  • The closing date for submitting entries to the 1st APAO Photo Contest is 23:59, February 20, 2019, Thailand time (GMT+7).

  1. RIGHTS AND OWNERSHIP
  • The Judging Panel is not eligible to participate in the contest.

  • The Judging Panel reserves the right to disqualify any photo that does not meet the submission criteria or has insufficient quality.

  • Entry is limited to original works that have not been formerly displayed or exhibited and for which the contestant holds all applicable rights.

  • APAO is not responsible for intellectual property infringement that might have resulted from the submission of photos.

  • The contestant must certify and warrant that the submitted photo(s) do(es) not violate the copyrights or other rights of any third party.

  • The contestant must not identify the patient(s) of whom the photos were taken.

  • No identification of the patient(s) is to be displayed on the photo(s).

  • All decisions made by the Judging Panel are final.

  1. AUTHORIZATION
  • Contestants retain copyright of their work.

  • By submitting their photos to the APAO Photo Contest, contestants agree to grant APAO free of charge the right to use the photo(s) in any manner and media, including, without limitation, the right to publish, adapt, distribute, copy, display or translate in printed or electronic media even if they are not the winning entries.

  • APAO agrees to acknowledge the contestants when their photo(s) is/are used in any manner and media or related materials.

  1. THE JUDGING PANEL
  • Charles McGhee, APAO President

  • Clement Tham, APAO Secretary-General and CEO

  • Paisan Ruamviboonsuk, 34th APAO Congress President

  • Visarute Angkatavanich, an expert in photography, arts, and design

(Mr. Visarute Angkatavanich is the Thai photographer whose photos of Siamese Fighting Fish were used as the wall paper to showcase the screen of iPhone 6)

  • External judge from the sponsor, Nikon and Optos

  1. THE JUDGING CRITERIA
  • Innovative means of delivering sense of ophthalmology (40%)

  • Uniqueness of concept (20%)

  • Creativity and overall artistic impression (20%)

  • Visual appeal or aesthetics (20%)

  1. THE JUDGING AND AWARD PRESENTATION
  • A total of 30 photos across all categories will be selected by the Judging Panel, without identification of contestants’ names, affiliations, and countries. These 30 photos, without identification of the contestants, will be exhibited in a photo gallery at the Foyer in Zone A of the 34th APAO Congress for final voting by the Judging Panel.

  • The 3 photos receiving the most votes will be the Champion (highest votes) and First and Second Runners-up (second and third highest votes).

  • APAO reserves the right to print and exhibit all the photos in the same size in the gallery. Locations of the photos displayed will be at the discretion of the APAO.

  • The awards will be presented during the APAO Congress Party on the evening of Thursday, March 7, 2019.

  1. THE AWARDS
  • Champion: A digital camera, Nikon Z6, from Nikon and Optos and a Certificate from the APAO

  • First and Second Runners-up: A Certificate from the APAO
